HOW TO STYLE AROUND YOUR TV USING A GALLERY WALL

You know the thing you’ve been staring at the whole quarantine…your TV? Let's talk about that blank wall behind it. We all know that the TV is now the center of any living room (even if we like it or not). However, this doesn’t meet that your whole living room has to look like a media room.

Today we’re talking about ways to style around your TV with a gallery wall. We’re talking ways to dress up your TV console and the wall behind it. This post is definitely catered more towards renters and those that can’t make any big architectural changes to their space. Don’t worry renovators - we will have a whole other post on “designing your TV into your space using shelving”.

ALL ABOUT BALANCE

I wanted to preface the whole post by talking about balance. We all know that the TV is the prime focal point here. Keep in mind when making any decisions to keep things subtle, and work with the scale from your big screen.

Another question I have gotten is about mounting your TV. This question can easily be answered with looking at the distance between your sofa and your TV. I love a mounted TV, just make sure you don’t mount it too high where you will be craning your neck to binge watch.

THE CONSOLE

I love our TV console. It is at the perfect height for our TV and has a ton of storage (this is great for small apartment living). However, I am also a huge fan of a more minimal or open console like this one pictured below from Target. (p.s. did you see the recent Studio Mcgee collection from Threshold @ Target? I am OBSESSED)

CONSOLE DECOR - TABLE LAMPS

On the console, we have two lamps on either side of the TV. The light wash these give on the artwork above them really gets me so excited. Plus, they create a nice glow behind the TV. The scale of these was really important to get right. Since we are working in “threes” (two lamps, one TV), I wanted these to be smaller and have some weight to them. They are only 18” tall, and the TV is 28” tall - forming such a great balance of scale. Below are some of my other favorite small scale lamps.

GALLERY WALL:

Above our TV console I have two portrait gold filigree framed pieces on either side of the TV, and then two smaller prints in a contrasting minimal black frame right above the TV. All four of these pieces mean something special to me.

  • The gold framed pieces I purchased on an impulse at the LA flea market. I bout them my senior year of college on a trip to figure out what my future job would be. The day before I bought these I declined an offer for a firm in DC. The day after I bout them, I got an offer from my dream job. These pieces represent a lot about intuition, and being confident in my decisions.

  • The small black frames above the TV are black and white photos of Matt and mine’s yearly trip to Hilton Head. Both of these series of photos have such importance to me and my life. I would suggest that every piece of artwork you put anywhere in your home have a meaning. Trust me, you’ll smile every time you look at it (just like I am right now writing this post).

I decided to have two contrasting frame styles here to complement the rest of my home. I have a lot of black/bronze and gold accents throughout my home. Below are some of my favorite frame pairings from Frame Bridge. When working through what artwork to put above your TV focus on scale, mixing frame styles, repetition, and above all BALANCE.
