USING ORGANIZATION TO STYLE YOUR HOME

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

So, it's January 12th and I feel like I’m just now starting my year. This is my first weekend at home after the holidays, and I’m sure I’m not alone when I admit I’ve been slow to start my New year’s resolutions. I mean…who really wants to do anything, let alone self improvement when you’re hungover Jan, 1!

My very first new year’s resolution this year is to get organized, and STAY organized - this always seems to be the hardest part. Don’t worry, this isn’t going to be a post where I encourage you to throw away all your possessions. I want to share with you how organization can actually support the design of your home. Organization is far beyond clear, plastic bins.  Simple organization can still be beautiful, and can even help you decorate your home.

The first step is to differentiate between items we deal with every day, and items we still need, but aren’t a part of our every day routine. For example, the skincare I use every day (face wash, face oil, etc) usually stay out in a tray on my vanity top. The things I don’t need every day (my favorite face mask) stay put away. Think of this as open vs. closed storage approach

// OPEN STORAGE //

Now, start to separate and organize your “open storage” items. My favorite way to do this is with trays, canisters, bowls, and baskets

*My favorite place for a tray is on the coffee table. It’s the perfect catch-all for remotes, matches, etc.

*The best place for clear canisters is on your vanity. Who knew storing cotton balls would look so chic.

Open Storage with Decorative Bowls

*I have decorative bowls like these all around our house. These chic catch-alls help tidy up all the random small things - bobby pins, chapstick, and the one random earring back.

Open Storage with Basketcs

*Looking for a cute way to store blankets, laundry, purses, and really everything? A textured basket is the best way to go.

// CLOSED STORAGE //

Do you have some things that you use every day, but aren’t the prettiest things around? Think of things like deodorant, your retainer (proud of you if you kept a hold of this one), or that random remote that you never use. This is where a closed storage solution is best:

*I use these EVERYWHERE, especially in my office. Check out more of how I styled them here.
